In a recent update, there have been two COVID-related deaths reported in Andhra Pradesh. Given the annual Rath Yatra celebration scheduled on July 16, health authorities in Odisha are on their toes. Andhra being Odisha’s close neighbour, the state has stepped up COVID-19 surveillance as lakhs of devotees, tourists and photographers from all over are expected to visit the state during this time. While officials have stressed that there is no cause for panic, travellers are being urged to remain cautious and follow basic health precautions during one of India’s largest religious gatherings.As per Odisha TV report, the Odisha Health Department has intensified monitoring in districts bordering Andhra Pradesh. Director of Public Health Dr. Rabindra Nath Mishra said Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs) in border districts have been instructed to strengthen surveillance and ensure that anyone with suspected COVID-19 symptoms is tested at district headquarters hospitals.As per the health department, Odisha has maintained COVID-19 surveillance despite the decline in cases. The Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the country’s largest religious events which attracts lakhs of pilgrims from across the globe. It’s an annual grand procession wherein the deities Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are taken out of the Jagannath Temple in decorated wooden chariots. These chariots are pulled by thousands of devotees to the Gundicha Temple. Rath Yatra is also a prime cultural and tourism event that showcases Odisha’s rich heritage.It involves long hours outdoors, close physical contact and crowded streets. These conditions increase the chances of spreading respiratory illnesses. Therefore, Odisha is already making arrangements for crowd management, emergency response and public safety. Tamil Nadu too responded to concerns. State health officials have advised people to remain vigilant, particularly vulnerable groups, while continuing routine surveillance and preparedness measures.
