Uber India and South Asia President Prabhjeet Singh has stepped down after spending more than a decade at the ride-hailing company, with the company confirming that he is leaving to pursue another leadership opportunity, PTI reported.Singh, who joined Uber in August 2015, was elevated as President, India and South Asia in July 2020. Uber has not yet announced his successor.An Uber spokesperson said: “We thank Prabhjeet for his leadership and lasting contributions in his decade-long journey with Uber – we remain deeply committed to our next phase of growth in India.”The spokesperson added that India remains one of Uber’s most important markets globally and a key driver of innovation and long-term growth.“The strength of our business today reflects the incredible team and foundation built over the years,” the spokesperson told PTI.
Led Uber’s expansion across South Asia
As President for India and South Asia, Singh oversaw Uber’s mobility business across India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, leading the company’s expansion and growth strategy across the region.An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Singh joined Uber from McKinsey & Company, where he served as an Associate Partner. He was also conferred the Young Alumni Achiever’s Award 2022 by IIM Ahmedabad for his contribution to corporate leadership.
India remains a key growth market, says firm
Uber entered India in 2013 with its app-based ride-hailing service and now operates in more than 125 cities, offering bike taxis, auto-rickshaws, cabs and metro ticket bookings through a single platform used by millions of customers.Last month, Uber Global CEO Dara Khosrowshahi visited India, where he met government ministers and company executives while reaffirming Uber’s long-term commitment to the country.During the visit, Khosrowshahi announced that Uber would set up its first data centre in India in partnership with the Adani Group, with the facility expected to become operational later this year.Posting on social media platform X, he had said: “As India fast emerges as a leading innovation hub for @Uber, we are setting up our first data centre in the country with the Adani Group to test and deploy our tech. Ready later this year, this investment will help us build at scale from India, for the world.”
Competition intensifies in ride-hailing
Singh had earlier described India as an “incredibly important market” offering a multi-decadal opportunity for Uber, saying the country is among the company’s largest markets by volume and continues to grow rapidly.India’s ride-hailing market remains one of the world’s fastest-growing, with domestic player Ola, global rival Uber, and newer entrants expanding their offerings amid rising demand for urban mobility and intensifying competition.
